What is Minecraft?
Minecraft is a game where you dig (mine) and build (craft) different kinds of 3D blocks within a large world of varying terrains and habitats to explore. In this world the sun rises and sets as you go about your work, gathering materials and making tools. There is rain and the occasional lightning storm, and animals that you can tame, farm or use for food. Depending on which mode you’re playing in, you might also need to fight for your survival against hunger, danger and bad guys.
How To Play MineCraft On Your Desktop?
Minecraft is what’s called a sandbox game, where the player creates the game themselves by manipulating the world within it (like kids playing in the sand). There are no specific steps or goals, so everyone playing the game is having a different experience.
Each time a new game is started it creates a new Minecraft world. You can have many of these worlds if you want, so that each time you play you can choose a different one to roam around in. The worlds are vast and filled with different types of terrain (biomes) and creatures (mobs), as well as things to explore like caves and ravines.
Players can also customize the way they experience each world using a bunch of different options. They can play by themselves (single player) or with others (multiplayer). There are two game modes to choose from – creative (where players have an unlimited number of blocks and items to build with and can’t die) or survival (players must find and build all of the things they need to avoid death by hunger, injury or attack from hostile creatures). There are also different levels of difficulty, each with its own unique features and challenges.
Each time the game is played there might be a different number of players or combination of mode and difficulty. There are also unofficial modifications that can be made to the game:
- Mods – Bits of code that change the way the standard Minecraft game looks or acts (e.g. adding new animals or giving a player more powers).
- Resource packs – Groups of image and sound files that change the way the game looks and feels (e.g. making all the grass purple).
- Minecraft is unlike other video games because ‘playing the game’ can mean something different to each player.

Minecraft Forge, the all-in-one system for mods
Minecraft mods used to have to be installed manually you had to open the original game files (which are in minecraft.jar), copy the mod, and delete a folder called META-INF. Unfortunately, this isn’t allowed in the latest versions of Minecraft.Minecraft Forge is an accessory that was added to Minecraft, making it possible to create and install all kinds of mods. It’s updated regularly and you won’t need to modify the original files.
1. Make a backup file
Before doing anything, make a backup of your Minecraft worlds. Open your file explorer, type % appdata%, and press Enter. Then go to /Roaming/.minecraft /saves.
A folder with sub-folders corresponding to your worlds will open. Copy them to another folder– if something goes wrong, all you’ll have to do is copy them back in the original folder.
2. Download and install Minecraft Forge
Download the latest version of Minecraft Forge. After downloading the file, double-click to open, and start the installation.
Leave the first option selected (Install client) and click OK. To verify that the installation was successful, open Minecraft, select the Forge profile, and launch the game.
3. Download and install mods and resource packages
Finding mods can be tricky. You must be aware of possible viruses and scams. Certain mods might be obsolete and won’t work, while a few of them are incompatible with other mods. If you only download mods for Forge, you’ll avoid most of these problems.
The best sites I know for downloading mods and resource packs for Minecraft Forge is on the official wiki list, as well as the PlanetMinecraft and ResourcePack sites. All mods and resource packages are in ZIP, RAR, or JAR format.
4. Copy the files in the /mods/ folder
Press Windows + R to open the Run window, type %AppData% and press Enter. Double click on Roaming and then on .minecraft. There you’ll see the mods folder.
Copy the files you’ve downloaded in the mods folder. When you open Minecraft again, Forge will check the folder, looking for any changes.
As for the resource packs, these are opened from the Options > Resource packs option in Minecraft’s menu. Some mods require specific packages.
5. Run Minecraft and enjoy the mods
Time to play! Note that each mod has different controls and interfaces. Always read the instructions that come with them– they tend to be in the mod’s original website or are included as text files.
6. What if something goes wrong?
One of the good things about Minecraft is the profiles. Whatever happens on each profile doesn’t affect the rest, so you can have a profile with Forge alongside another independent one. If the Forge profile is corrupted, you can easily create a new one.
