The civic works taken up to facilitate draining out of Hussainsagar by blocking the traffic on Tank Bund, caused severe traffic jam in many parts of Secunderabad on Friday.
The traffic curbs which came into force with effect from Friday caused traffic jams both in the morning and in the evening at various places like Begumpet, Rasoolpura, Rangigunj, Marriot, Liberty and Secretariat and other places. As a result, office-goers and students who appeared for the ICET had a horrific time. While some missed the test, scores reached their exam venue just in time.
For Mastan Ali, a resident of AS Rao Nagar, he spent some nervous moments fearing that his son would not be able to reach his exam centre at the Nizam College on time because of heavy traffic jam.
“From Bible House heavy traffic jam started and the vehicles were moving at a snail’s pace. The traffic was diverted towards Kawadiguda, Lower Tank Bund via Gowshala before reaching Ambedkar statue near Tank Bund. My son was very lucky as we could reach the centre at 9.56 am, four minutes before the gate was shut. What would have been my son’s fate if we were late by four minutes,” recalled Mastan Ali with a shudder.
Similar was the situation in the evening as the vehicles were bumper to bumper because of the traffic jam.
Officials said that the traffic diversion was notified to public in advance. Since it was the first day there was some confusion, they said and added the situation would ease in coming days.
The traffic restrictions have been imposed due to the road cutting work between Karbala Maidan and Sailing Club (near Buddha Bhavan Island) for laying of 2375 MM dia MS trunk sewer main as part of beautification and purification of Hussainsagar and the restrictions will continue till May 31.
