Countdown for IRNSS 1C launch commences at Sriharikota

The 67 hour countdown for the launch of the Indian satellite of navigation, IRNSS 1C, third one in the series that is to be placed in the India’s navigation system, par with the US’ GPS, began on Monday at the spaceport of Sriharikota. Following the clearance from the Launch Autorisation Board, the countdown began at 6:32 AM on Monday as expected and is going on smoothly, said ISRO in a statement released. Depending on the mission of requirements, the launch will be on October 16th between 1:32 AM to 1:47 AM (Indian Standard Time). The lift off of is scheduled at 1:32 AM as announced by the national space agency.

The launch was actually scheduled on October 10th, but postponed due to some technical reasons.  ISRO has planned this in accordance to build a regional navigational system that is equivalent to the Global Positioning System of the United States. Thus ISRO is planning to place the Indian Regional Navigational Satellite System (IRNSS).

The applications of IRNSS include the terrestrial and marine navigation, disaster management, vehicle tracking and fleet management. This is similar to the US’s Global Positioning System, Russia’s Glonass and Europe’s Galileo. And China and Japan have similar systems namely Beidou and Quasi Zenith.
